The Jewish conundrum: If America only knew (continued page 3)
Geopolitics of Israel: Truman/Nixon/Trump
Not only are America and Israel joined at the hipculturally/religiously, but militarily by the geopolitics of the Middle East. This strategic relationship between Washington/Tel Aviv began with Nixon/Kissinger during the Yom Kippur War. It increased during the 70’s with OPEC/oil embargo, and then intensified by the Khomeini Revolution in Teheran in 1978. The Khomeini Revolution triggered the rise of Islamic Fundamentalism leading to Osama bin Laden, 9/11, and most recent, the rise of ISIS.These events strengthened the Tel Aviv and Washington nexus.
It further divided the Middle East into two competing factions Iranian/Shias/Russian and Saudi/Sunna/American. This division is being played out today in the Syrian civil war and in the conflict in Yemen. America has thrown its enormous financial and military support behind Tel Aviv and Saudi Arabia explaining why Trump has walked away from the Iran Nuclear Agreement negotiated under Obama. This decision, although welcomed by Israel, creates greater uncertainty in a part of the world already shattered by thirty years of war, and terrorism, since Operation Desert Storm drove Saddam from Kuwait.
Only recently has America questioned its role in Yemen flowing from the brutal murder of Saudi writer/critic Jamal Khashoggi by crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Economic Cost to America:
America must begin to re-evaluate its financial relationship with Israel as its costs far outweigh the geopolitical benefits .America today is confronted with a collapsing $2 trillion infra- structure ,which needs immediate repair.Bridges, highways, commuter systems, sewers, and water need significant upgrades. In addition, Millennials/Plurals are saddled with a trillion dollars’ educational indebtedness. This debt profoundly impacts their ability to start a family, become home owners, and to be entrepreneurial and innovative.
The matter of income inequality continues to climb in America. The recent tax reform bill gave the wealthy a 21 percent gift via the Republican Party while most Americansare left with nickels and dimes as wages stagnate despite all the hoopla. It certainly isn’t fair to ask the average American to give to the Netanyahu government additional billions for the black hole of military defense when manyoftendon’teven have $500 for home emergencies or car repairs and medical expenses.
Since 9/11, America has spent at least $2 trillion in the Middle East on military operations in Afghanistan/Iraq that are at best pyrrhic. Now it seems, that at the prodding of Israel and Saudi Arabia, a major conflict with Iran is brewing with dangerous nuclear implications. The Straits of Hormuz would close leading to a catastrophicoil shortage disastrous to the global economy.
The issue of the economic hardships of the Israeli dole on Americans, however, strikes at a deeper structural issue i nAmerican politics that revolves around campaign finance reform. Unfortunately, the Robert’s Supreme Court ruled 5/4 in 2014 in favor of Citizens United eliminated any restrictions on campaign financing through PACs (Political action Committees) not directly connected to parties to the applause of K street and AIPAC supporters. It is estimated that more than 20 percent of congressional campaigns funds come from unlimited and unrestricted accounts that plays into the hands of the Jewish lobby. Getting the Supreme Court to reconsider this ruling in light of political opposition from the Mercer/Coke familiesis unlikely.
Moral Cost:
America historically has presented itself as the leader in the cause of freedom, equality, and human rights, but in the case of Palestine, Washington has been blind-sided to what is happening throughan Israeli lobby which has skillfully indoctrinated the American psyche to such a degree that Israelis are always exonerated, but the Palestinians vilified, for the bleeding wounds in Gaza and the West Bank.
However, the International Court of Justice is investigating the human right violations regarding Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem. Although Israel is not a member and claims that the Court has no jurisdiction over it, the issue is embarrassing. The great tragedy is that America, although a member, blindly supports Israel repression against the Palestinians .John Bolton, U. S. National Security Advisor, protested that an ICC investigation into American war crimes in Afghanistan are illegitimate. Similarly, he announced Washington’s decision to close the Palestinian Liberation Office in D. C., because of its request that the ICC investigate Israeli questionable actions against its people.(https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/sep/10/john-bolton-castigate-icc-washington-speech).
In 2004, the U.N.'s highest judicial organ, the International Court of Justice, ruled in an advisory opinion that Jewish settlements breached international law. In late 2016, the U.N. Security Council also declared the illegality of settlements. Over 600,000 Israelis live in the West Bank and east Jerusalem-- territories sought by the Palestinians as parts of a future state. Israel captured both territories from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war.
Under international law, it is illegal to transfer populations out of or into occupied territory.Mahmoud Abbas, chair of Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), said it was time to seek redress in court."We will not allow injustice to be Palestine's destiny." (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/palestinians-ask-international-court-to-open-immediate-investigation-into-israel)
Where goes America? What has happened to its moral values of quality and justice for all. How can Americans not see the injusticesexperienced by the Palestinians. Why does Congress not free itself from the Jewish propaganda machine and reassert the universality of equality for Arabs, Palestinians, and Muslims.
Come on America, it’s time to wake-up from the Zionist fairy tale!
